Class 1 LGV Driver

Class 1 LGV Driver in Transport Dept

Bulkhaul Limited provide a global service for the distribution of bulk liquids and powders and has representation in over 100 countries worldwide. The operation is controlled from our corporate headquarters in Middlesbrough, supported by Bulkhaul offices strategically located in the United States, Japan, Singapore, Korea, Brazil, Belgium and Germany.

Continued growth of our business provides several career opportunities within the organisation. Our Transport Department are continuously recruiting within the UK for full-time, permanent Class 1 LGV Drivers. There are two divisions within the Company for Class 1 LGV Drivers; the ADR Liquids Division and the Bulk Powders Division.

ADR Liquids Division

Responsibilities of the ADR role include loading, discharging, cleaning and the shipment of tank containers that transport hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids. A valid ADR certificate (in tank containers) is a requirement of the ADR role in every classification except 1 & 7.

The ADR role for the liquid’s division will operate out of the Middlesbrough, Trafford Park, Leeds or West Thurrock operating centres.

The shift pattern for each of the operating centres will be Monday to Friday, with some weekend working. Overnight stays will occur on this shift pattern with a duration of between 55 & 60 hours work per weekly shift.

The Middlesbrough operating centre also operates a 4 on 4 off shift pattern

Bulk Powder Division

Responsibilities of the Powder role will include loading, discharging, cleaning and the shipment of 30ft box containers that transport non-hazardous granules and foodstuffs.

The role for the bulk powder’s division will operate out of the Middlesbrough, Leeds, Newport, Hull, Trafford Park or West Thurrock operating centres.

The shift pattern for each of the operating centres will be Monday to Friday, with some weekend working. Overnight stays will occur on this shift pattern with a duration of between 55 & 60 hours work per weekly shift.

The Trafford Park, Newport and West Thurrock operating centres also operate a 4 on 4 off shift pattern.

Operating Centres

The successful candidates will be expected to work wherever the Company require, however each operating centre will work generally as follows:

Middlesbrough – mainly within the Teesside area and the A66, A1 and M62 corridors.

Trafford Park – mainly within the Manchester area and the M6, M62 and A1 corridors.

Leeds – mainly within the Yorkshire area and the A1 and M62 corridors.

Hull – mainly within the Humberside area and the M62 corridor.

Newport – mainly within the M3 and M4 corridors.

West Thurrock – mainly within the South East area and the M3 and M4 corridors.


The successful candidates are expected to:

    -have a valid LGV Category CE Driving Licence;
    -have a good knowledge of EU tachograph legislation;
    -have a minimum of 12 months Class 1 driving experience;
    -have no more than 6 penalty points on their licence (none of which are to be related to drink/drug driving offences or dangerous driving);
    -have good organisational skills ensuring timely deliveries;
    -have excellent communication skills and a cooperative and positive attitude;
    -be flexible in their approach to working outside the area on shift patterns, to include overnights and Weekend working when required by the Company;
    -work an average of 55-60 hours per week on a Mon-Fri shift pattern;
    -work an average of 48-58 hours per week on a 4 on 4 off shift pattern;
    -be reliable;
    -have good knowledge of Geography and UK roads;
    -maintain high levels of Customer service / care;
    -be compliant with Health & Safety and HR policies and procedures;
    -ensure Company instructions and standards of discipline, workmanship and safety (including accident reporting) are maintained at all times and within strict industry guidelines;
    -have high personal and professional standards

Previous experience within this area of the industry is an advantage.

All Class 1 LGV Drivers will receive the following Company benefits:

    -£11.30 per hour for all hours worked (plus London weighting allowance from West Thurrock operating centre (see below)) *

Monday – Friday plus weekend working shift pattern will receive the following:

    -8 basic hours per day guaranteed Monday-Friday
    -40 basic hours per weekly shift guaranteed
    -28 days holiday per year (including bank holidays, this increases with long service)
    -London weighting allowance £32 / day Mon-Fri – payable to drivers based from the West Thurrock operating centre only.

4 on 4 off working shift pattern will receive the following:

    48 basic hours per weekly shift guaranteed
    25 days holiday per year (increases with long service)
    London weighting allowance £32 for each day worked payable to drivers based from the West Thurrock operating centre only.

Potential earnings for a Monday – Friday shift pattern can be circa £38,500 or circa £46,000 if in receipt of the London weighting allowance.

Potential earnings for a 4 on 4 off shift pattern can be circa £28,500 or circa £35,000 if in receipt of the London weighting allowance.
